World Premiere of the Play “The Only Tallest Trees on Earth”

Ivan Vyrypaev’s new play is a model of contemporary drama that blends high literature with the genre of absurdism. Continuing the tradition set by outstanding Polish authors of the postwar absurd — Sławomir Mrożek and Tadeusz Różewicz — Vyrypaev integrates it into the Russian cultural context, drawing on the legacy of Dostoevsky and the poetics of the OBERIU group.

“The Only Tallest Trees on Earth” is a genre fusion of modern stand-up, absurdism, and Vyrypaev’s recognizable style. The characters are fictional Americans from the United States — not prototypes from real life, but characters born from American films and literature. This artistic device not only alludes to postmodernism but also shapes a new aesthetic of “integral art.”

Plot and Themes

The project is a satirical drama that examines the contradictions of the modern world: double standards, corporate greed, political demagoguery, and the consequences of globalization. The production develops ideas of deconstructing established values, inspired by the philosophy of Michel Foucault. The play raises the question of choice in the context of ideological divides.
